Important milestone for Nobby Gaol

Recent stories

Ahead of its complete restoration, an event will be held on Saturday, 11 October to acknowledge the move of the Nobby Gaol to its new site in the centre of town.

The public is invited to attend the gaol’s site on Tooth Street, next to the railway station, from 2pm to 3pm.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald will be in attendance.

Over the past six years, Rudd’s Pub owners Evan and Gayle Jones with the help of the community have been on a mission to move and restore the gaol.

“It’s been a community effort to get it where it is today,” Mr Jones said.

Instrumental in the project has been the Jackson family, who donated the building, as have many tradespeople who have volunteered their time to help out with stumping, painting, roofing and much more.

The Nobby Heritage and Development Association has also played a key role.

When the project is completed, a plaque will be installed to thank all those who made it is possible.

The gaol is hoped to be a tourism attraction for Nobby.

Mr Jones said the current plan is to hold a special carnival type event to celebrate the completion of the gaol’s restoration.

It is hoped this will be around Easter next year.

Coinciding with the special event on Saturday, 11 October is the Mental Health Awareness in the Transport, Rural & Civil Industries Day fundraising event, to be held at Rudd’s Pub from midday.

The Mental Health Awareness day will feature live music raffles, auctions, competitions, ten lucky door prizes and a truck and car show and shine.

Tickets are $10 and all money raised goes to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
