Working dogs show their skills

Recent stories

The Maclean Show Society committee is recovering after their biggest weekend in recent memory with great crowds enjoying the NSW Working Dog Stock Trial championships.

The 2025 Clarence Valley Council and Maclean Show Society NSW State Championships Working Stock Dog Trial was held at Maclean Showground from July 25 to 27, with competitors vying for $5000 in prize money.

Maclean Show Society secretary Pru Ensby said the event was arranged to coincide with the Australian Working Cattle Dog Championships, which were held at Casino from July 16 to 20.

“We tried to make it that if people were coming from far and wide for the Australian Championships, then they could stay and compete at ours as well,” she said.

“We had two and a half days of competition with more than 250 runs, including the finals.

“It was a huge event for our committee.

“We’ve never done an event that big before.”

44 competitors came from all around to take on the trials, with the dogs being either Kelpies or Border Collies.

“We had the Happy Davis Memorial Maiden, and we had Novice and Open events,” she said.

Pru said the response from the community from advertising and roadside signage was fantastic.

“The feedback we were getting is that I saw your ad, or I heard it on the radio, or I saw your signage, all weekend, which was really good,” she said.

“People turned up in droves every day, which blew us away…absolutely blew us away.

“We had to have several runs down the street to Richies IGA, to keep the canteen topped up, to stock up supplies because we ran out.

“It was a great weekend.”

Winners of the 2.5 day event where an amazing 298 runs were held were:

  • Happy Davis memorial Maiden – Zac Ede and Leeway Panda.
  • Open – Graham Langham and Langham Rose.
  • Novice – Brendan Horadam and Tick.
