The Hon. Adrian Pederick, Shadow Minister for Regional Roads (SA), Media Release, 17 July 2025

The Opposition has welcomed the State and Federal Government’s announcement to establish a barge crossing at Cooper Creek on the Birdsville Track, delivering long-awaited relief for outback communities and freight operators.

Shadow Minister for Regional Roads, Adrian Pederick said this is something that should have been addressed months before the Birdsville Track was flooded, but comes as a great result after asking questions in Parliament three weeks ago.

“The Government must now commit to not charging a toll for the use of this barge for both industry and tourism,” Mr Pederick said.

“The Birdsville Track is a vital artery for the people of the Far North and for the movement of livestock, freight, and tourists through some of the most remote parts of our state.”

Mr Pederick added that the barge will particularly benefit cattle graziers, station owners, and the broader supply chain – with more reliable access, reducing economic disruption during flood events.

“I commend the community and industry stakeholders who have continued to advocate for this solution. Their persistence has finally been recognised.”

Mr Pederick called on the Government to ensure the barge is well-managed, appropriately staffed, and operates on a reliable schedule to avoid further disruption.

“This must not be a set-and-forget solution. The Government needs to work closely with locals and logistics operators to make sure this barge works effectively and is maintained appropriately.

“Our outback and regional roads are the lifeblood of the state. The Liberals remain committed to improving safety, connectivity and economic resilience for the people who live and work in our regions.”
