Giant Mallee Wood Scorpion wins Moulamein Art Gallery sculpture comp

A giant Mallee Wood Scorpion has won the 2025 Moulamein Art Gallery sculpture competition in the large section.

The entry by Rhys Mortensen and Marty Horn [pictured at left] was constructed using many different types of scrap material, including gears, cogs, heavy chain and the pressure plate from a clutch.

Second prize went to Noel Sutton who entered and cleverly-designed emu. Highly commended by Stuart Holt.

Anthony Harris won first place in the small section with Stuart Holt second and China Gibson highly commended.

The bi-annual event was well attended, with Gallery president, Kathy Gibson saying it was becoming bigger and better each year.

China Gibson was an enthusiastic and prolific competitor in the small section of the sculpture competition, entering many cleverly designed creatures.

His dunny spider earnt him a highly commended and was soon sold on the night.

The body of the spider was made from an old dunny lid, and China has promised to start work soon on his 2027 entry in the large section.

Catering on the night was in the capable hands of Shelley Baldwin, pictured [left] with fellow Gallery member, Joy Sutton.
