The Hon. Michael Kemp, Member for Oxley, Media Release, 2 October 2024

After sustained calls from the community, the regional crime inquiry is finally set to take place in Kempsey this month.

Michael Kemp, Member for Oxley, has been pushing for this critical inquiry, driven by the alarming surge in violent crime that has left families, businesses, and the entire community  in fear.

“This inquiry is long overdue, I’m relieved that Oxley will finally get the attention it deserves.”

“Our region has been plagued by violent crime for far too long. We need to feel safe in our homes and have our property respected. This community deserves better,” Mr Kemp said.

Mr Kemp emphasised the importance of listening to locals like Marilyn, a resident who has endured many home invasions and had her car stolen more than 20 times.

“Stories similar to Marilyn’s, from victims of crime, must be heard loud and clear at this inquiry,” Mr Kemp said.

“What we don’t need is an inquiry that cherry picks its witnesses or ignores the very people who’ve been impacted the most,” he said.

With crime forums in Nambucca Heads and South West Rocks, Mr Kemp has been working closely with local law enforcement, the Minister for Police and community leaders.

“Our local police are doing everything they can with limited resources, but they can’t solve this problem alone. The families of victims of crime must be supported,” he said.
