Future proofing your farm – Soil health and water in the landscape event series

New Australian film – Thankful for Soil

Northern Slopes Landcare Association and Tamworth Regional Landcare are running a series of events for farming communities across the North West to inspire conversations about the importance of soil health and understanding water in our landscapes to build more resilient and profitable farms and communities.

The events also feature the screening of new Australian short documentary Thankful for Soil, an inspiring film celebrating the story of Australian farmers who are using the soil beneath their feet to combat climate change and build a brighter future for their family farms.

The film, produced by Nviro Media in partnership with Thankful 4 Farmers, features passionate farmers who shared their soil story including, Graham Finlayson Brewarrina NSW, Dave Woods, Goondiwindi Qld, Rhonda and Bill Daly, Young NSW, Matthew Evans Tas, Fat Pig Farm, Stephanie Trethewey Sam Trethewey. Thankful for Soil Filmmaker Suzannah Cowley will host a Q&A with farmers and presenters after the event screenings.

Also attending the events will be Regional Soil Co-ordinator Cameron Leckie who is part the National Soil Action Plan and has identified key areas to support soil health outcomes in agriculture.

The Future Proofing your Farm events will be held from 12 – 15 August 2024 in Moree, Gunnedah, Quirindi and Tamworth to support farmers to come together to hear from a range of speakers to learn about how to achieve better soil health on-farm to build a more sustainable approach for agriculture in the future.

World soil expert Joel Williams will speak at the Moree event on Monday 12th August about soil biology, plant nutrition, managing disease, reducing inputs with soil health strategies. Local farmers from across the region will share their stories of building soil health and biodiversity into their farming systems.

A short presentation will also by Prof Martin Thoms, UNE on the hydrology of the Namoi Catchment will feature the Water in the Landscape Initiative (WILI). This is a local project lead by UNE and community groups collaborating to better manage water in our local landscapes to future proof farms and communities against drought and floods and to provide education about how to create better water outcomes for all communities. Representatives from WILI will also be included in the speaker line up at the Gunnedah, Quirindi and Tamworth events.

These events are funded through the NSW Landcare Enabling Program and Moree Plains Shire Council
