Bankwest branch closures: Love

Recent stories

The Hon. Shane Love, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Nationals (WA), Media Release, 6 March 2024

Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Nationals WA Shane Love has today noted Bankwest’s announcement of a transition to a wholly online servicing model and closure of their branch network across the State.

Bankwest, which is owned by CBA (Commonwealth Bank of Australia), has stated 15 regional branches of Bankwest will be converted to CBA branches. In communities where both banks currently have branches, Bankwest customers will be transitioned to the local CBA branch.

“I have had assurances from Bankwest that communities which are currently serviced by their business will be given the opportunity to transition to CBA customers with direct support from their team” Mr Love.

Mr Love reiterated the importance of customer confidence in this transition process, noting the particular banking needs of regional areas.

“The proof of this good-intent will come over time. At this point Bankwest and CBA have committed to continue employing their regional staff with CBA providing services in every community where a Bankwest branch has been present until now.”

This in stark contrast to the decisions of other major banks which have stranded whole regions with no local banking services when branches have been pulled from communities. Despite the protests of those communities and the advocacy of their local MPs.

“The likes of Westpac and NAB have been known to pull crucial services from regions with no regard for the needs of the community – it is refreshing to see this shift in corporate thinking.”

Mr Love encouraged all Bankwest customers to seek information regarding the changes.

“This is a significant change for customers and staff, and I urge anyone with concerns to contact Bankwest directly.”
