Recent stories

Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), Media Release, 7 November 2023

Brief webinar to showcase research conducted on a commercial farm in Tasmania, where steers were allowed ad libitum (free) access to feed-grade biochar. The webinar will discuss results measured for liveweight gains, pasture composition and growth, manure and soil organic carbon, enteric methane emissions and cost-benefit modelling. The webinar will outline consumer and farmer perceptions associated with feeding biochar to ruminant livestock, as well as implications for animal and soil health, greenhouse gas emissions and environmental co-benefits. Effects of biochar on soil carbon and enteric methane are explored by way of scenario analysis. The webinar will include discussion of wider aspects associated with feeding biochar and will be followed by Q&A. We thank Meat & Livestock Australia and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture for funding this research.
