Last week, Mayor Suzette Beresford and CEO Ms Cassie White of Paroo Shire Council attended the “Our Communities Our Future” conference hosted by the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) in Canberra.
The conference, which focused on regional development and local government, featured notable speakers such as the Hon. Kirsty McBain, Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, and the Shadow Minister, the Hon. Darren Chester. Attendees had the opportunity to hear insights from speakers and engage in panel sessions.
Mayor Beresford participated in a panel discussion “Connecting our Communities,” alongside Mayor Raynor from Longreach Regional Council and CEO Dr Tim Harrison from Ararat Rural City. The session explored strategies and initiatives to strengthen community connections in local government areas.
The conference boasted an impressive line-up of speakers who covered a wide range of topics relevant to local government. One notable presentation by Saul Griffith, an engineer and entrepreneur specializing in clean and renewable energy technologies, generated significant discussion and raised many questions among attendees.
Additionally, Paroo Shire delegates attended the Australian Council of Local Government (ACLG) event, which was opened by the Prime Minister and attended by senior Government Ministers who also participated in panel sessions throughout the day.
The ALGA Conference provided an excellent opportunity for Mayor Beresford and Ms White to engage with federal ministers and network with local government representatives from across Australia. Mayor Beresford had the chance to connect with the Hon. Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government during the ACLG dinner. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon. Milton Dick, took the opportunity to show the South West Queensland Mayors the Mace, symbolizing his authority in Parliament.
Mayor Beresford and Ms White were grateful for the opportunity to attend the ALGA Conference, which allowed them to gain valuable insights, collaborate with national leaders, and further strengthen Paroo Shire’s representation in the local government arena.
