Blues set the benchmark

Recent stories

Cudgewa has put the rest of the competition on notice that it is the team to beat this season after racking up another percentage builder against Corryong on Saturday.

The Demons were short on numbers and had five players double up from the reserves and after a spirited first half, Cudgewa gained the ascendancy to run away with the match.

Cudgewa’s potent attack proved unstoppable with Ben Hall atoning for a poor effort from round one with seven goals which was matched by star recruit, Adam Prior, who also booted seven majors while last year’s leading goalkicker, Nick Brockley, chipped in with four.

The Blues midfield kicked up a gear after the main break and Darcy McKimmie, Craig Lieschke and Dayne Carey won plenty of the ball to set up their power forwards.

The Demons battled stoically for the majority Blues set the benchmark of the match with Thomas Shanks, Pat Riley and Thomas Nicholas leading the way but a lack of run in the latter stages allowed Cudgewa to storm home with a 16-goal second half.

Bullioh caused a minor boilover when it held out Tumbarumba to record a one-goal victory over the reigning premiers.

Scores were close throughout a scrappy match and only a point separated the sides at the last break after some inaccurate shots at goal but the Dogs added two majors to one in the final term which was sufficient for them to snare the four points.

Jake Curran and Clayton Bosman were Bullioh’s best players while the Roos were best served by Isaac Lampe and Jacob Read.
