Rockhampton Regional Council, Media Release, 18 April 2023

Rockhampton Regional Council has adopted an Urban Greening Policy which will work towards increasing tree canopy and vegetation across the region.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the policy plays an essential part in shaping the liveability of our community by improving urban greening.

“Our Urban Greening Policy outlines and recognises that a healthy natural environment contributes to a prospering region,” Cr Rutherford said.

“The policy sets our position and builds on our commitment to urban greening to ensure the region’s urban forest is suitably recognised, managed, protected, enhanced and monitored.

“The accompanying action plan will see Council deliver upon several actions and initiatives in a holistic approach, with a review date of 2027.

“Whilst many actions and projects are internally focused and centred around continuous improvement, organisational collaboration and firming up corporate documentation, Council remains committed to pursuing more ambitious greening opportunities and long-term targets.

“It’s so wonderful that we have been able to take this first step in cultivating an abundant green infrastructure network from the ground up.

“We’re sitting alongside many other local and state government departments currently working in this space too.”
