Gannawarra Shire Council, Media Release, 7 February 2023

Residents who would like to provide local knowledge and support planning for future flood events are encouraged to consider becoming a volunteer flood observer.

Gannawarra Shire Council, Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) and the North Central Catchment Management Authority are seeking new flood observers, especially from residents in the Pyramid and Wandella Creek areas.

“Our flood observers played a pivotal role in responding to the October-December 2022 floods, with their knowledge vital at what was a stressful time for our residents,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

Flood observers assist emergency services with preparations for floods, including helping people in areas identified most at risk.

Flood observers are members of the Gannawarra Flood Planning Committee, which meets twice a year, and play a major role in developing local flood management plans, which are implemented when a flood occurs.

“As we have seen in 2011 and last year, knowledge and experience is vital when responding to any flood event,” Mr Rollinson said.

“If you have the knowledge and the time, please consider joining this important group of residents in helping with future flood events.”

For more information or to volunteer to become a flood observer, please phone Council on (03) 5450 9333.
