After helping to keep the Clarence Valley community safe for 20 years alongside his fellow crew members from South Grafton Fire and Rescue 307 Station, Graham Richards has been recognised for his selfless contributions and dedication to his role.

On December 7, the local firefighter was proudly presented with the long service and good conduct medal by Zone Commander Greg Lewis.

Describing the occasion as “a bit of a surprise,” a humble Mr Richards told the Clarence Valley Independent he has experienced many highs and lows throughout his career, including saving lives, assisting people in need, and fighting to protect homes and businesses while sadly, watching others be destroyed, during the catastrophic bushfires which tore through the villages of Nymboida and Rappville in 2019.

Recalling the relief and appreciation which appears on the faces of locals in distress as soon as they see firefighters arrive, Mr Richards said working with emergency services and being in a position to give something back to his community makes his job extremely rewarding.

“All situations you respond to are different,” he explained.

“One house fire can be completely different from the next one, and you don’t know what to expect from a call out until you get there.

“You’ve got to be prepared for anything.

“Meeting people, giving them a hand, and seeing them waving at you and giving you a big welcome as soon as you arrive, those are the moments that you always remember.”

Mr Richards complimented his fellow firefighters at South Grafton Fire and Rescue 307 Station as a pleasure to work with, adding they always make him smile, which “helps to relieve the pressure felt at the end of a long day.”

South Grafton Fire and Rescue 307 Station Captain Paul Danvers said Mr Richards is one of the most reliable firefighters he has worked with, adding his recent accolade is “highly deserved.”

Describing him as very capable and experienced, Captain Danvers said the station is very lucky to have Mr Richards as part of their crew, and the knowledge and expertise he is able to share with young firefighters and crew members is an invaluable asset.

As he enjoyed a low-key celebration following the presentation last week, Mr Richards acknowledged his fellow firefighters and extended a special thank you to all of the stations throughout the Northern Rivers district (RN2) for their ongoing support.
