An excited crowd of over 600 people attended the recent Coonalpyn & District A & H Show on October 15th. Even though there were a few light showers in the morning, everyone was keen to see what the day had to offer. Coonalpyn always welcomes patrons from far and wide, and tripled its population for the day!

President Ashley Obst welcomed all to the Show at the official opening and introduced special guest Liz Harfull to open the show. Liz is an accomplished author who wrote the successful Blue-Ribbon Cookbooks as well as several books capturing the stories of remarkable everyday Australian women. Patrons had a chance to purchase signed copies of her books later in the afternoon.

This year our State Politicians and Local Government members were invited to take part in the annual Politician’s Bake-off – this year a set Chocolate Cake Recipe. 11 entries were received, and the public judging was well attended. First place went to a local government rep. Michael Rabbitt; 2nd Nick McBride MP and 3rd Emily Bourke MP.

Circus Elements provided a fun workshop as well as roving entertainment with stilt walking throughout the day and the Amazing Drumming Monkeys drew crowds for their performances. A free Bouncy Castle and the popular Discovery Trail provided younger patrons with fun and goodies as they visited numerous generous traders around the grounds, including free face painting or glitter tattoo. Stockman’s Challenge events took place throughout the day with some great horsemanship displayed to onlookers and as always, yummy food was available from our food, coffee and confectionery vendors. This year we even had a pop-up Barber to ensure the men could go home looking neat and trim!

The Junior Ambassador Quest was judged this year by Jesse Chapman, 2022 SCSA Rural Ambassador, Henry Scott, from Next Gen and Helen Marshall. Congratulations to the 18 young people who entered the quest and to the winners: Little Ambassador Renae Mueller, Murray Bridge, and runner-up Caitlin Mueller. Mini Ambassador Tilly Doecke, Tintinara; R/Up Amberley Gale.  Intermediate Ambassador Thomas Whittle, Tintinara, R/Up Cooper Woods, Keith. Teen Ambassador Asher Neumann, Yumali; R/Up Allana Wigzell, Adelaide. Six of these winners and many of the other entrants also had exhibits in the main pavilion and all are an important and integral part of our Show. We thank them and their parents for their valued support.

Thanks go to the Section convenors, many of whom had added “Year of Glass” themed classes and decorations for our 77th Show.  Over 1000 entries were displayed in the Main Pavilion, and 200 entries  in the Horses, Poultry, Wool & Grain made for a delightful display. The Biggest Weed – a hotly contested class in the Grain and Fodder section was won by Jameson Todd with a marshmallow weed that was almost too tall to fit in the pavilion. Best presented Indoor Section was won by Section I: Eggs, Jams and Preserves. They also topped the entry numbers with 212 entries this year.
