Shire of Ashburton, Media Release, 1 July 2022

Shire of Ashburton residents can now take advantage of capped airfares travelling to and from Perth from July 1, 2022.

The first scheme of its kind to be implemented in Australia, the WA State Government has committed $19.8 million to deliver the capped airfare scheme over the next three years.

Regional airfares have long been a concern for residents and community members and a topic Shire of Ashburton Councillors have strongly advocated for.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White acknowledged the capped airfares would be welcomed by Shire residents.

“Many community members need to travel to and from Perth for medical and personal appointments, as well as to see family and access services and amenities that are not available in our regional areas,” said Councillor White.

“A capped airfare of no more than $299 each way, for a return flight will be a huge benefit for most residents.”

“Importantly our residents will still be able to access fares below the Zone Cap prices, such as sale fares if and when available.”

The capped airfares are available to Tom Price and Paraburdoo residents travelling out of Paraburdoo Airport and to Onslow residents that travel out of Karratha Airport.
