Tennant Creek IGA has thanked its freight drivers for trekking more than 1,000 kilometres extra to supply food to the region after the recent floods blocked roads into the Territory.

The first truckload of goods arrived yesterday morning and the supermarket management were on hand to thank Gilberts Transport Service driver Francis Williams for his hard work.

IRAM CEO John Kop said without these truck drivers, Tennant Creek wouldn’t have food.

“We are so thankful to them,” he said.

“We have been loyal customers of Gilberts Transport Service for many years and they are looking after us.

“Francis travelled 3,500 kilometres to get here and there were other trucks going another 500 kilometres to get to Alice Springs. It just reinforces how important road transport is to this country,” he said.

Extra pallets of goods were ordered to ensure there would be enough supply for the township until the next delivery on Sunday.
