This new aged care home has been integrated with the existing hospital to ensure residents have access to skilled aged care assessment, older patient initiatives and subacute programs, education and telegeriatrician services, while feeling comfortable, supported and at home.

The new building has more than doubled the capacity of the old aged care home, has the capacity for up to 38 beds and provides on-site accommodation for couples and family members visiting their loved ones.

Gnullingoo Mia Residential Care will also provide culturally appropriate palliative care for residents with life-limiting conditions, with a $5 million contribution from the End of Life and Palliative Care initiative to ensure the facilities match the needs of people with advanced stage illnesses.

New residents as well as residents transferring from Poinciana Lodge began settling into their new home from late October.

Gnullingoo Mia follows the extensive redevelopment of the Carnarvon Health Campus, completed in 2016.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

“It is great to be in Carnarvon to officially open Gnullingoo Mia, a bright, modern aged care home that will provide care and home comforts to residents for many years to come.

“Carnarvon is a vibrant community that maintains a strong connection with their older residents.

“The development of Gnullingoo Mia Residential Care has been embraced by the local community from the beginning.

“Gnullingoo Mia means ‘our home’ in the local Inggarda language and I’d like to thank the community, staff and residents who have come together to make this truly fantastic care service a home.”

Comments attributed to Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn:

“I’m delighted the local community is already benefiting from the additional beds.

“The extra beds have enabled existing Carnarvon aged care residents to move into their new home, and it has also allowed aged care residents to return home from other parts of the State.

“I’d like to commend WA Country Health Service on the delivery of this key project, allowing older Western Australians in the Mid-West to age on country and close to home.”
