Tennant Creek Girl Guides celebrated its 80th birthday on Saturday morning with an Open Day at the Showgrounds.

Everyone was welcome to come along and see some of the history of Guides in Tennant Creek, and also to get a look at what the girls get to do under the careful guidance of their leaders, not to mention the special treat of being able to take a ride in the Bushfires vehicle courtesy of Keven Stout.

There was interest in the photo display, and many of the girls were happily making crafts from other countries all under the watchful eye of District Manager Sheelagh Walsh, who is a familiar sight for more than one generation of Girl Guides in town, having been involved for 38 years herself.

She now assisted by not only her daughter Debbie, but also granddaughter Katie – an achievement that is probably unique to Tennant Creek, as well as Kirsteen Squires and Kelly Hogan.

Here’s to another 80 years of Girl Guides in Tennant Creek.
