The $12.1 million, Federal-Government-funded upgrade has created an expanded terminal with enhanced facilities, upgraded runway and improved safety and security measures that comply with new Federal Government standards.

Whyalla City Council Mayor Clare McLaughlin said the impressive upgrade had delivered a modern, future-proofed facility, which will service locals, tourists and visiting professionals.

“This new airport further positions Whyalla to capitalise on the numerous growth opportunities earmarked for our future, in particular the new industries that will potentially be established in our city,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“Importantly for locals, they will be able to enjoy a modern airport, complete with café facilities; baggage carousel; historical pictorial wall; and security screening, which alleviates the need for additional screening when arriving at Adelaide Airport.”

A further advantage from the upgrade is increased safety for emergency personnel, who now have a safe pick-up and drop-off area, no longer needing to drive across a live apron.

The finished product is a credit to local industry, with the project using local steel and labour, helping maximise benefits for the local economy.

Passengers flying from Whyalla as of Monday are encouraged to allow extra time than previously due to the new security screening requirements – ensure you check with your airline regarding their timeframes.

New airport features:

  • All new facilities, including a new cafe
  • Modernised baggage handling systems, including installation of a baggage carousel
  • Disability-friendly facilities
  • Business hubs / charging stations
  • Free wi-fi
  • Additional check-in facilities
  • Contemporary interior design, including an airport history pictorial wall

Still to come:

  • Upgrades to runways, lighting, taxi ways and aprons (including improved emergency-service access)
  • Alternate runway with extension of current dirt strip
