Some of it is clear glass but there are also blue and shades of green and brown pieces in the sand.

North ward councillor Sonet Coetzee contacted Yanchep News Online after she had been alerted about the issue.

Today about 11.30am the City of Wanneroo said the sand contamination issue was quickly detected and the beach and beach access points were closed for public safety.

A City of Wanneroo spokeswoman said the area would remain closed to the public until mitigation works were completed.

“All efforts are being made to ensure the beach is open to the public and accessible for surf lifesaving operations by October 23,” she said.

“To ensure the safety of the community, the city has also temporarily suspended sand delivery to Quinns Beach.

“A small amount of sand that was delivered to this location before the issue was identified will be removed as soon as possible.

“The city is working with its contractor to ensure the rigorous testing process in place is effective in mitigating the risk of contamination for future renourishment works.”

She said there had been no issues with sand contamination during previous renourishment works at any of the city’s beaches.
