The Scenic Rim will shine on the global sporting stage when it hosts the rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the announcement of the successful bid for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo tonight was something that dreams are made of.
“This is a moment in history and time that we will never forget,” he said.
“In 11 years we will have the world’s best rowers and canoeists paddling here at Lake Wyaralong, cementing their place in history and making dreams come true.
“Our residents will have the opportunity to attend events and watch world-class athletes in action and be part of something truly remarkable.
“And hopefully, for all our budding young athletes, today’s announcements will provide them with inspiration to train hard and be part of this event.”
Cr Christensen said there was no bigger value capture globally than hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“The 2032 Games are estimated to bring up to $8.1 billion of economic and social benefits for Queensland and $17.61 billion nationally,” he said.
“In addition, thousands of jobs will be created and the boost to the tourism industry will be incredible.
“Importantly though, is the delivery of a regional games that has long-term benefits for the local communities.
“Throughout the past six years with my fellow South East Queensland Mayors, our focus has always been on securing the City Deal, which is a long-term agreement across all levels of government to deliver the infrastructure we need.
“We will see all three levels of Government working collectively together to bring benefits not only to the south east, but to the rest of Queensland and Australia.
“For the Scenic Rim, this means proper upgrades to the Mount Lindesay Highway and access to Bromelton to provide us with reliable and sustainable transport infrastructure for the future.
‘There’s no better place in the world than South East Queensland to host a truly regional Games.
“We will now turn our hand to delivering the best Games possible – an Olympic and Paralympic Games that not only puts the region on the map as a must-do destination, but also to deliver the legacy infrastructure that’s so important for our growing communities.”
