The Barossa’s landmark play destination, Barossa Adventure Station at Angaston, has been named South Australia’s Park of the Year.

The Barossa Council took out the award at the Parks and Leisure Australia SA/NT 2021 Awards of Excellence, and will now vie for the national title later this year.

The $2.78 million attraction, which is part of The Big Project, was recognised as a bespoke play space and regional tourism destination.

Council’s nomination focused on the clever integration of heritage, open space, adventure play, natural landscape, events spaces and community connection points at the site.

Restoring the heritage railway station building and adaptively reusing railway elements was also a key feature of the redevelopment.

Mayor Bim Lange said Barossa Adventure Station has redefined how people use and enjoy the precinct.

“You only need to look at the number of people visiting this facility to see its value to our region,” said Mayor Lange.
“By activating the space we have been able to support positive recreation, social and economic outcomes, and we believe visitation will only grow as more people discover this unique facility.

“This has been a truly community-led project and we thank all our stakeholders, from community groups like Angaston Community and Business Alliance to contractors and our dedicated Council staff, who have all been part of this exciting journey.”

The Rex was also recognised at the Awards with a high commendation in the Community Based Initiative of the Year Award for its commitment to access and inclusion through the ‘Changing Places’ project.
