Winterwords is a week full of talking, listening, watching and doing, which aims to foster the celebration of words in all their forms and functions, and includes workshops, performances, exhibitions, discussions, interactive sessions, and displays, of visual and performing arts, literature, poetry, storytelling, games, and music.

Winterwords is new and innovative, specifically designed to occur during the ‘quiet’ winter period. It is a festival BY the community, FOR the community. Many events are free or ticketed at very low cost, while others will ask for a simple, gold coin donation.

Events are planned for the Burke Museum, the Old Beechworth Gaol, Quercus Oregon Hall, and the Town Hall to take advantage of our wonderful heritage buildings.  There will be music, fun and games, at many of the hotels such as Billson’s, the Empire, Tanswell’s, and the Nicholas, and a special literary lunch at The Stanley Pub.

Finally, some activities, such as our art exhibition and poetry readings, will be run in collaboration with other community organisations, (e.g. Mayday Hills Arts Society, U3A, Quercus Beechworth, Friends of the Burke Museum, Stanley Athenaeum) making Winterwords a truly community event.
