The Wakool Show was back with a fantastic flurry of fun, food, music and entertainment.

This year’s show was rolled into one action packed evening and the community support was fantastic with families coming from Wakool, Moulamein, Koondrook-Barham and Deniliquin.

The former Wakool Football Club oval had a course for the equestrian events with tent pegging and potato races showcasing the skill and bond of the riders and their steeds.

Contestants competed on parallel courses and at the start signal they charged off to the first peg or potato, collected them while mounted and returned around the start point before venturing out to the subsequent peg or potato.

A collection of show bags, and a jumping castle on the netball courts provided the young kids with much entertainment, complemented by the Kerang Rotary Club Train weaving a course around, filled with joyful children.

The extra thrill for the kids came in the form of a Lego competition. The teams of kids were all given a bag of Lego in which they had to design and create their potential winning design.

While the kids were occupied, the adults had a chance to sample the goodies on offer. A fully stocked bar was complemented by Jo and Don Hearn, Restdown Wines, with locally grown organic wine on offer. The selection of food was fantastic, from all the traditional show favourites to arancini balls, risotto and lasagne.

The quick shear competition was back with Aussies versus Kiwis. The first battle saw the ladies taking to the boards, dragging out a ewe and giving it a haircut. The Aussies won the ladies’ battle.

The second battle was the male teams with each fielding four shearers. The energy was high as the shearers guided the combs through the fleece as the crowd cheered on. The Kiwis developed an early lead and although the Aussies pulled out all the stops, it was the Kiwis who took out the victory.

The final event before ‘Endangered Species’ provided the live music was race between man, horse and horsepower. Under lights, race man, Darcy Hausler lined up against horse and rider, Dakota, ridden by Lucy Anthony and horsepower, Charles Adams on a dirt bike. At the drop of the flag the competitors took off down parallel courses then circled around consecutive 44 gallon drums and back across the line. The nail biting finish saw Darcy sprint home to victory nudging out Lucy and Dakota in second, Charles roaring home in third.
