Ministers officially open the Barkly Business Hub
The Barkly Business Hub has officially opened after an almost $4 million refurbishment of the old Government building on Peko Road, which was a key initiative of the Barkly Regional Deal. The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (DITT) and the Department of Chief Minister and Cabinet have already moved in and begun operations.
Community honours fallen police heroes
Police officers have an important, but sometimes dangerous job in the community; for this reason Police Remembrance Day marks those officers who have either been killed on duty or died whilst serving. First commemorated in 1989 it occurs on 29 September each year.
Council appoints new Deputy Mayor
Councillor Greg Marlow was voted in as Deputy Mayor at Barkly Regional Council’s Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday. The newly-appointed Deputy Mayor takes over from Cr Russell O’Donnell who has served in the role for a year.
Young volunteers hold pop-up Op-Shop in Peko Park
A group of around two dozen young people from Darwin and Mareeba visited Tennant Creek this week, as part of the STORMCo initiative by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Despite their holidays, these young people volunteered their time to assist the community in Tennant Creek.
Elliott Stronger Sisters clear environmental waste
Pam Dillon. Girls from the Elliott school Stronger Sisters program recently held their annual canoe camp at Longreach Waterhole ... all the girls became involved in a cleanup and cleared two garbage bags of cans and plastic bottles and a bag of general rubbish.
Bernie the Barkly Eagle’s guest appearance
Barkly Region Sport Education has a very famous mascot, Bernie, who travels the region with Pam Dillon, the Barkly Region Sport Education Coordinator. Students in all the Barkly schools know Bernie and are keen to have their photo taken with him when he visits their school.
Students represent the Barkly at athletics championships
Pam Dillon. Last week, 13 students from seven remote schools represented the Barkly in the NT Athletics Championships in Darwin. The students participated in a variety of running, jumping, and throwing events over three days along with athletes from other regions and athletic clubs across the territory.
