Update on Kaniva drinking water upgrade
Kaniva’s drinking water upgrade is scheduled to be finished supplying treated water supply to Kaniva by December 2024. Kaniva is the largest town in the GWMWater service area that is yet to receive a drinking water supply.
Fire risk not over in the Wimmera
For the first time in many years, a fire observing aircraft will be situated for the next month in the Wimmera due to the alleviated fire risk during this time. Aircraft are strategically positioned across the State depending on risk, and while this area has had aircraft in place when required, Horsham aerodrome will now have a fire observing aircraft fulltime, for at least the next 30 days.
Torrential rain and powerful winds wreak havoc in the district
Last Wednesday saw a mammoth amount of rainfall and winds across the district including Yanac, Diapur and Boyeo. Brett Wheaton at Yanac South measured 86mm and said there was a lot of flooding, including Yanac Creek and the swamp was filled.
Karen New Year celebrated in Nhill
After months of planning by the Nhill Karen Community, our town really came to life on Saturday with the celebration of the Karen New Year. There were over 1,000 in attendance travelling from around Victoria and some even from interstate.
The Great Express wreck
John Williams. "Hang on, we are going to crash, look out", was the dramatic warning given to the driver of the second engine of the Adelaide-bound Express a few seconds before one of the biggest railway smashes in the history of Victoria. On the foggy night of September 7th 1951, Kaniva and Nhill fire brigades rushed to a reported train wreck involving two Expresses at Serviceton, just near the South Australian border.
Australia Day award winners announced
Kaniva resident Michael Hodges is West Wimmera Shire’s Australia Day citizen of the year. The award will be presented to Mr Hodges at Kaniva’s Australia Day celebrations .. Other Australia Day award winners include community event of the year Henley on Lake Wallace, in Edenhope, and community group of the year Lake Wallace parkrun.
CFA quells crop fire opposite Nhill Racecourse

Dickinson selected for Bloods
Congratulations to Kaniva Leeor United’s Mitch Dickinson who has been selected in the u/18 centre for excellence squad for the 2024 season for West Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL. Matches will begin at the end of March and he has already been attending preseason with the club.
