Natural Hazards Research Australia, Media Release, 16 March 2026
What can we learn from the meteorological conditions and extreme fire behaviour at the 2019 Currowan fire in New South Wales and 2021 Wooroloo fire in Western Australia?
Join us for the March Hazardous Webinar: Fire case studies to hear from fire and meteorology experts about the Fire case studies project and perspectives from the end-users who will use the project outcomes.
- Date: 31 March 2026
- Time: 11:00am–12:00pm AEDT
- Where: Zoom
Speakers:
- Dr Mika Peace (Bureau of Meteorology and Natural Hazards Research Australia)
- Laurence McCoy (New South Wales Rural Fire Service)
- Jackson Parker (Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Western Australia)
Dr Mika Peace will detail detail the unprecedented 2021 Wooroloo and 2019-20 Currowan fires and how they are improving understanding, operational practice and responses.
Using observations and high-resolution modelling not possible in real time during a bushfire, the case study approach to learning from these fires will enable fire agencies to better prepare and respond to future bushfires. The findings also highlight learnings for fire practitioners and affected communities and contribute to development of science-based policy.
Laurence McCoy and Jackson Parker will provide an end-user perspective to both the fire case studies and the project methodology, discussing how the outcomes will be put into practice.
