Crowd down, but spirits up at Greenmount

Recent stories

An early morning storm combined with less promotion than in previous years probably contributed to the smaller crowd of spectators at the Greenmount Billycart Challenge on Saturday but the enthusiasm of the competitors was as strong as ever.

The storm struck just before starting time and while it was not as heavy at Greenmount as across other parts of the Darling Downs, it was enough to deter some spectators who had been planning to travel to the event.

The interest from competitors was there and some travelled long distances to be part of the racing.

It was the third year of the Greenmount Billycart Challenge so the drivers knew what to expect.

While many of the carts are becoming a familiar sight to regular spectators, despite minor and not so minor improvements to some models, the racing also attracted some innovative billycarts this year, a few of which proved to be extremely competitive.

The vice president of Get Chopped Community Events Inc., which organises the day, Brendan Quirey, remained upbeat
about the 2025 event.

“Another great day out in Greenmount was had by spectators and competitors alike,” he said.

“We would like to thank all of our valuable sponsors and volunteers for all of their hard work to ensure a great and fun day for all.”

When asked about the likelihood of a 2026 event, his response was positive: “There sure will be!” he said.
