Ten-year old Jack Warburton’s love of nature and mountain biking inspired an award-winning short story about two brothers who ride from Albany Skate Park to the Olympics.

The year four Denmark Primary School student was placed third in the middle primary division of the Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers.

Jack’s story, An Ugly Malarky, is packed with action, following the brothers, Jack and Tom, from Albany Skate Park to the Olympics, and saving the day in between.

Jack travelled with his family to Perth for the awards ceremony where he met other finalists and award patron, author Craig Silvey, who wrote Jasper Jones, Honey Bee and Runt.

With a big smile, Jack, and his brother, Tom, are planning their stories for next year.

The Craig Silvey Award for Young Writers, formerly the Tim Winton award, is an annual competition run by the City of Subiaco open to students from years one to 12.
