Metha.ai, Media Release, 17 October 2024
Metha.ai, a company launched from MIT in 2022, is revolutionising the agricultural sector by reducing methane emissions from livestock with its groundbreaking AI-driven microbiome analytics technology. Metha.ai’s proprietary technology not only cuts emissions by 30-40 per cent but also enhances milk yield efficiency by 5-10 per cent, helping farmers and processors meet sustainability goals whilst improving farm economics.
Metha.ai will be making its first visit to Australia this October to explore opportunities with local companies and farms, including Phibro Animal Health, Dairy Australia and the Victorian Government’s research facility, the Ellinbank Smart Farm.
The visit will include participation by CEO Dr. Yaniv Altshuler in a panel discussion at the AARN (Australian Association of Ruminant Nutrition) Conference, where he will discuss Metha.ai’s advancements and the critical role of methane reduction in slowing global warming. The company aims to develop new relationships within the Australian market to support local agricultural sustainability initiatives.
Addressing the methane challenge
Methane emissions from agriculture account for approximately 40 per cent of global methane output, with livestock responsible for 80 per cent of that amount. Methane’s impact on global warming is 84 times greater than that of COâ‚‚, making its reduction one of the most effective ways to address climate change. However, traditional methods, such as generic feed additives, struggle with efficacy due to variations in local conditions. Metha.ai’s targeted approach overcomes these challenges by offering precise, herd-specific recommendations.
“Our technology uses rumen microbiome samples and advanced AI analytics to deliver tailored solutions that drastically reduce methane emissions,” said Dr. Yaniv Altshuler, Founder and CEO of Metha.ai. “This method, rooted in mathematical biology and big data, not only curbs methane emissions but also boosts milk yield. This creates measurable value across the dairy and beef supply chain.”
Meeting Scope 3 goals through innovation
Dr. Tzruya Calvao Chebach, VP Business Development and Impact, explained: “For dairy and beef processors, Metha.ai offers a scalable solution to meet Scope 3 emissions goals, enabling them to optimize methane reductions while supporting farmers in achieving increased yields and monetize carbon offset and inset markets and programs. Livestock supplement companies also benefit from enhanced measurement of their product impact, backed by Metha.ai’s data-driven insights.”
An expert team leading the charge
Metha.ai’s founding team is led by Dr. Yaniv Altshuler, an MIT Research Fellow and World Economic Forum “Technological Pioneer,” and Prof. Alex “Sandy” Pentland, a renowned data analytics expert and member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
