Name of RFS deputy captain John Holmes added to the 119 names on emergency services memorial

There are 119 names engraved on a monument at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in Sydney to honour the fallen men and women from the state’s volunteer emergency services.

One of the new names added is John Holmes who was senior deputy captain of  Mallanganee Brigade.  He died at the fire front at Bean Creek in October 2023.

The names on the memorial are of the men and women who have served in the NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service, Marine Rescue NSW and the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association.

Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib joined RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers and NSW SES Acting Commissioner Deb Platz and guests at the NSW Emergency Service Volunteers Memorial Service today, Sunday, October 13 to honour emergency service volunteers who died as a result of serving the community.

The names of Mallanganee senior deputy captain John Holmes, Diamond Beach captain Leo Fransen, Mid Murray group captain Dale Bowles and SES volunteer Troy Mooney were added to the memorial.

Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib said the loss of these four dedicated individuals is a tragedy for their families and friends, as well as the communities they helped protect in their time as volunteers.

There are about 90,000 volunteers across emergency agencies in NSW.

Commissioner of the RFS Rob Rogers said, “I would like to personally thank the families of our volunteers, who sacrifice time with their loved ones so they can serve the community.”
