Recent stories

Melons Australia, Media Release, 11 October 2024

Please be aware the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has issued an immediate cancellation of the registration and use of all products containing chlorthal dimethyl, also known as Dacthal or DCPA.

Key points below:

  • Please refer to the APVMA’s notice attached below, and see the APVMA Special Gazette, 10 October 2024 for further information.
  • Chlorthal dimethyl is a herbicide used in vegetable crops, turf and cotton.
  • The NFF is urging all farmers to immediately comply with the directive to cease use of these products. The use or supply of chlorthal dimethyl as an agricultural chemical product is now illegal.
  • The APVMA has made this decision, in alignment with the United States Environmental Protection Authority, on the basis that the chemical poses an imminent and serious risk to human health, specifically to unborn children via maternal exposure during occupational handling. There is no risk to consumers of food from crops treated with affected products.
  • Farmers and retailers may continue to the hold products until further notice but must not use or supply any cancelled products. Further recall instructions will be made available by the APVMA.
  • The NFF will distribute relevant information to members to ensure farmers understand how to appropriately dispose of cancelled products in their possession.
