Rate rise kept to a minimum

Recent stories

The Towong Shire Council has adopted its 2024/25 Budget which focuses on roads maintenance.

“We recognise that we’re facing challenging economic times and on that basis, we believe the budget strikes the right balance between ensuring your rates are being invested efficiently and effectively while meeting all the needs of our community,” said Towong mayor, Cr Andrew Whitehead.

The budget includes a 2.75 per cent rate increase in accordance with the rate cap set by the Victorian government under the Fair Go Rates system.

“The current pressures on our ratepayers caused by the increased cost of living was a key consideration when preparing the budget,” Cr Whitehead said.

“It is important to note that with inflation significantly higher this presents real challenges to the future sustainability of council.

“The Budget also provides for the ongoing delivery of quality facilities and services to residents including a focus on upgrading, repairing and maintaining our roads and bridges network with $4.7 million allocated to this key infrastructure.

“Ultimately, we think this budget reflects our commitment to prudent fiscal stewardship, strategic investment, and community wellbeing and we remain dedicated to fostering a thriving, resilient, and inclusive community for all.”

In other council news, a new unified tourism website has been developed that will replace the existing Visit Upper Murray and Valleys, Lakes and Vistas sites.

“The improved site will feature the wealth of attractions and activities Towong has to offer our visitors, including cafes, hotels and stores that add value to the visitor experience,” Cr Whitehead said.
