Free fish for all at festival

Recent stories

The 10th annual Gynburra festival was held at Port Victoria on Friday and Saturday, January 26-27.

The festival is named after the Gynburra fish, also known as butterfish or dusky morwong, which has cultural significance for the Narungga people.

Festival director Garry Goldsmith said the festival attracted about 1000 visitors on both days.

“People travelled across the country to attend and catch up with family and friends on Narungga Country,” he said.

“For the first time, we offered free butterfish for all, which had been caught fresh and seasoned with Australian Native Food Company spices and cooked by members of the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol.

“Gynburra guests were welcomed to Country by Djaran, Kytanna, Uncle Bobo, Harley Hall and Kuma Kaaru.”

“We had a massive fireworks spectacular to conclude a very successful event.”

Narungga Nation Aboriginal Corporation was the major sponsor of Gynburra 2024.

Clem Graham Memorial Fishing Competition winners were: Butterfish King (open men, biggest fish), Damian Graham; open men most fish, Michael Buckskin; Butterfish Prince (under 18 biggest fish), Jareth Newchurch; under 18 most fish, Brodie Power; over 55 biggest fish, Uncle Paul Baker.
