Tyred Turkeys want to bring tourists on treadlies to town

Recent stories

The Tyred Turkeys are anything but tired.

The group has 12 bike riders who ride regularly and have been mapping bike routes for 20 years.

There are six founding members of the group who still ride together including Greg Daley, 68, and Damien Cox, 67.

They have mapped several signature rides in Kyogle LGA that take about four hours.

“The Border Ranges is a big challenge,” Greg said.

“Unless you have an ebike (electric bike) or are young.”

The Tyred Turkeys do a longer ride each year.

“We rode around New Zealand 10 years ago,” Damien said.

Greg enjoys the group for its social connection.

“It’s good cycling by yourself, too,” he said.

Both riders use gravel bikes.

“The bikes have bigger tyres,” Damien said.

The added benefit of this riding is the fitness.

Greg believes bike riding could be a booming tourist business for Kyogle.

“There’s an ebike hire shop in Murwillumbah,” Greg said.

The Tweed Valley rail trail has been a boost for that.

Greg would like to see Kyogle benefit from the Bentley to Casino rail trail when it’s finished. And even more so when the Bentley to Lismore section is complete.

He’d like an offshoot bike trail that brings riders to Kyogle.

And he wants Kyogle Council to look at a bike track extension of the rail trail.

Greg and Damien laugh as they pose for a photo with their bikes. They are full of energy, and it seems to take restraint from them to stand still with their bikes. They’d much rather be riding.

Greg has shared the bike maps he has navigated on the app and website Rides With GPS. You will need to sign into the app to view the maps.

Here are some of the maps on the app.

This track is for when the rail trail is completed.
