Central Highlands Regional Council, Media Release, 28 April 2023

As part of the Australia Government Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program, council has engaged a contractor to undertake the design and construction of pavement rehabilitation works on the Rolleston Aerodrome Landing Area runway

The design phase is expected to commence in early June and conclude in mid-June 2023 with the construction phase to commence between July and September 2023.

To facilitate the construction works the airstrip will be closed to aircraft operations for 6 weeks.

Council will provide an update to the frequent airport operators and community prior to the works commencing. These updates will be provided via council’s website, Facebook, the Bauhinia Bulletin and distributed directly to the Rolleston community through community groups.

Councillor Christine Rolfe commented on the vital need for ALA’s in the Central Highlands region.

‘Council operates a network of Aeroplane Landing Areas (ALA’s) throughout the region for light aircraft landings,’ Cr Rolfe said.

‘ALA’s provide an important transport facility for private, agricultural operations, and commercial charter flight operations in the Central Highlands.

‘As well as providing vital facilities to emergency and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS),’ she continued.

The rehabilitation works in Rolleston will include the below stages:

  1. Design finalisation and verification.
  2. Reshaping of the existing runway which will include the importing of granular unbound pavement material for shape correction and overlay.
  3. Insitu stabilisation of a blend of existing runway materials with imported materials using cement.
  4. Application of a two-coat bitumen seal and reinstating line marking and all associated fixtures and furniture.
  5. Returning the ALA to service.

Please note, we do not expect the helicopter parking bay to be closed during this time.
