Australia’s very own ‘Schitt’s Creek’ could be yours

Recent stories

An entire town in Victoria’s Gippsland region complete with the local pub is up for sale, with 21 lots across 4.45-hectares in Coopers Creek coming to market.

A former mining town, Coopers Creek, sits on the Thomson River in Gippsland, around 130km out from the Melbourne CBD, and at one point had a population of about 250 people.

These days the site is home to two camp sites, a handful of caretakers, a two-bedroom home, a defunct hotel and what’s left of the lime quarry that ceased operations in 1952.

Ian Mason from Mason White McDougall is managing the sale of the town, via an expressions of interest campaign on behalf of the vendors, the Holyoaks family, and expects the site will sell in the range of $2.5 million to $3 million.

The Holyoak family first came across the small town in the 1960s and spend the following four decades acquiring the entirety of the area’s titles, which range from 660sqm to 12,000sqm.

The Coopers Mine Hotel, which was run by the original buyer’s sons, burnt down back in 1999 before a replica was built in its place including a pool room, dining area, stage and commercial kitchen.

The pub has since closed its doors in 2007, with the family now hiring out the town to music festival operators each year.

In addition to the c. 1000 visitors showing up to the site each year for music festival events, Coopers Creek brings in bushwalkers, 4WDers, kayakers, fishermen and horse riders.

According to Mason, enquiries are already being fielded from both interstate and overseas buyers.

The town is being marketed as “Australia’s Schitt’s Creek”, in reference to the hit Canadian television show where a family loses their fortune before moving to a small town they had once bought as a joke.

“Like the Rose family in Schitt’s Creek, Coopers Creek could be a life-changing move for the right buyer,” concluded Mason.
