On Monday, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula visited the historic village to announce the huge funding boost for the tourist attraction.

“We’re investing in this project because it will create jobs and allow future generations to learn about Victoria’s fascinating gold rush era,” said Minister Pakula. “The new accommodation will encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the Central Goldfields- that’s a win for local business.”

The restoration, which will include the school, blacksmith and lolly shop, will provide a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the village as it was generations ago and learn about how gold shaped Maldon and Victoria’s heritage.

The new accommodation will include glamping tents and safari-style cabins at the village and will encourage visitors to stay longer and enjoy all the region has to offer.

Manager of Porcupine Village Deb Baird told the Times, “We’re very excited. This $1.7 million will help kick us on, and we will hopefully be opening soon.

“We’ve also hired a new chef, Sonya McCarthy, who will be starting in June,” said Deb.

Porcupine Village will also feature a native wildlife sanctuary and a function space for school excursions which will help children learn firsthand about the gold rush era and the environment.

Tourism is a key contributor to the Goldfields economy, with the region attracting more than 8.1 million visitors in the year ending December 2019.

MP Maree Edwards said, “Maldon’s economy relies almost entirely on tourism; it is a historic village in its own right. Porcupine Village will add to accommodation and encourage people to stay longer. Plus there’s the restaurant which will cater to events and weddings. It’s an all around great package.”

According to Doug Baird, Manager of Porcupine Village, once open, the facility will employ 25-30 staff, including restaurant staff, grounds staff and two full time blacksmiths, who will be producing commercial products such as gates. The accommodation will have the capacity for 110-120 beds, excluding the caravan park.

“We are awaiting approval of the town planning application and liqueur licence,” said Doug. “We are hoping to open within weeks, not months.”
