West Wimmera Shire Council has named Serviceton’s Les Millikin as the 2025 Senior Citizen of the Year.
Mr Millikin was presented the award at West Wimmera Shire’s Seniors Concert at Kaniva on Tuesday.
Since moving to Serviceton in 2002, Mr Millikin has made an enormous contribution to the local community through his volunteer work at the historic Serviceton Railway Station.
He has spent countless hours maintaining and cleaning the station, tending the gardens, and keeping the grounds neat and tidy.
Mr Millikin is a wealth of knowledge on the history of the station – he has uncovered memorabilia over the years and willingly guides visitors on tours.
On many occasions, he spends whole days at the station, sharing its history with locals and tourists alike.
His community spirit extends well beyond the railway station.
Mr Millikin regularly mows around the trees in Serviceton to reduce fire risk, helps clean common areas, and assists residents in need with gardening and maintenance.
He is an active member of the Leeor Fire Brigade and the Serviceton Bowling Club, where he contributes to working bees and supports club activities.
Known for his friendly nature and tireless work ethic, Mr Millikin is highly respected across the community.
West Wimmera Shire Council Mayor Tim Meyer presented Mr Millikin with his award and praised his service to the community.
“Les is an extraordinary volunteer who embodies what it means to serve quietly and wholeheartedly,” he said.
“His commitment to maintaining the heritage of the Serviceton Railway Station and supporting the wider community is truly remarkable.
“Les doesn’t seek recognition, yet his impact is seen and felt everywhere in Serviceton.
“This award is a fitting acknowledgment of his generosity, dedication, and spirit.”
The Senior Citizen of the Year award recognises shire residents aged 60 years or more who have made a difference to community wellbeing, have a positive attitude towards aging, continue to be active in their community, and encourage others to do the same.
