Due to the conditions in Tokyo Matthew Denny threw well below his best.
Torrential rain and a wet, slippy throwing circle were not ideal for the discus final held on Sunday night at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo.
On Matthew’s first throw he slipped, fell and went close to spraining an ankle.
The Olympic bronze medallist was not happy. The Competition was stopped at this staged.
After consultation with the athletes the competition was restarted after the conclusion of all the other events and the closing ceremony.
Matthew finished in fourth place throwing 65.57 metres.
This is well short of his personal best of his 74.78 metres at the Oklahoma Throws Series World International held in April this year.
It is certainly a discus final that Matthew will always remember, probably not for all the right reasons.
