100 years of worship in the Nhill Uniting Church was celebrated in style last Sunday morning. People travelled from across the State, and interstate, to enjoy a morning of music, messages and memorabilia.
Rev Ian Brown from Warragul brought a message of hope for the future in an ever changing world. Nhill Uniting Church was Ian’s first appointment as a young minister in 1994, and he and his family will always remember the hospitality shown to them during that time. Other former ministers, Rob Morgan, Russell Dunlop and Presbytery Minister Rev Trevor Bassett also took part in the service. The Karen Baptist Church who share the church building joined in the celebrations and sang a blessing in their own language.
A hymn book given to Roy and Elsie Hall, the first couple to be married in the new church in 1926, was on display, along with photos of church weddings and baptisms. Memories of the ‘Singing Christmas Tree’, of overflowing Sunday Schools, church and hall renovations, and ministry in small churches dotted around the district were all included in a visual presentation tracing the history of the church. Simon King has compiled a comprehensive history book which is now available for sale.
At the conclusion of the Service Annette Etherton cut the birthday cake made by Colleen Dickinson. Although the building may be 100 years old, it continues to serve its original purpose to bring glory to God as a place of worship, fellowship and service to the community.
