Usually, the book fair report showcases books available, but this month’s topic is Amazing People. The book fair team currently consists of 14 regular helpers and a few partners who get ‘coerced’ into helping with specific jobs. Three of the most enthusiastic book fair volunteers are under the age of 18, while some have celebrated their 80th birthdays. Working together, sharing skills, abilities and knowledge, they have created a vibrant and successful inter-generational team.
The book fair itself is nestled between the CWA pop-up shop and Lowana, two long-established organisations run entirely by volunteers.
At the time of writing this editorial comment, I am based at the outback locality of Milparinka outback NSW partway through a two-week volunteering adventure. The town, if a pub and two houses can be called that, has a steady stream of travellers coming to learn about the history and experience the solitude and isolation of the area. Each April until November teams of volunteers manage the caravan park and Heritage Centre. Volunteers work seven days a week for periods of two to four weeks and there is currently a 12-month waiting list for those wanting to volunteer.
There are also people who make a career of volunteering and I recently met one such remarkable bloke. In his words he was heading out bush to earn a few dollars to support his real work – delivering books to people in the bush.
With an old ute and trailer, he is providing a welcome service to people in the bush. All the books are free, and he often collects from one station to drop off at the next. With his two blue heeler companions he has travelled more than 1.3million kilometres around remote NSW and Qld. He tells me that he didn’t have an opportunity to attend school, and this is part of the reason he believes so strongly that people need access to books.
This chance meeting has provided yet another welcome outlet for any excess books from the book fair. Donations of books, jigsaws, DVDs and board games are always appreciated and can be left at the book fair on the first Saturday of each month. If that does not suit, alternative arrangements can be made by phoning 0419379000.
Volunteering is alive and well in the bush and the book fair is always looking for people to join the team as many hands make light work (literally – as books are heavy!). Call in on book fair day and chat to any of our team or call/text the number above. Next book fair August 2, 10 am – 2pm. Jo Ussing, Coordinator.
