The Toganmain Woolshed Precinct is preparing to celebrate a momentous milestone – its 150th anniversary in June 2025.
Located near Darlington Point in the Riverina, this iconic woolshed has stood as a testament to the craftsmanship and resilience of Australia’s pastoral history since its completion in 1875.
The enormous structure was built by shipwrights and, over the years, has witnessed various pivotal events in Australia’s history, including the boom of the wool trade, devastating floods and enduring droughts.
As one of the most significant surviving examples of pastoral architecture, Toganmain is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register, cementing its place in Australia’s rich agricultural history.
In 2025, the Toganmain Woolshed Precinct Inc. will host a two-day celebration, set for 14-15 June, to commemorate the history and ongoing preservation efforts of this important site. The celebration will include:
- A special dinner on the main shearing board under the lights, creating a unique atmosphere in this historic setting.
- Open days allowing visitors to explore the woolshed and precinct, with local guides stationed around the site to provide insights into its fascinating past.
- Live entertainment from the local band, Stickie Fingers, and a variety of market stalls featuring food and local products.
The new book, Toganmain Woolshed: Then and Now will be launched during the 150th anniversary weekend and captures the rich history of Toganmain Station.
Director of Toganmain Woolshed Precinct Incorporated Ian McLaughlin said it includes a brief history of the station’s ownership; poems, diary entries, and memories from shearers, wool classers, shedhands, hut keepers and cooks; the inspiring story of the Friends of Toganmain and their restoration journey; and a rich collection of old newspaper clippings alongside many historical and recent photos.
The 120 page publication is available for purchase at the celebration weekend or via the Friends of Toganmain website for $45 plus postage.
A raffle with exciting prizes is being run, with tickets and details available for purchase on the website.
Toganmain’s significance extends beyond the local community. As seen on ABC TV’s Landline, it serves as a symbol of the perseverance and resilience of rural Australia.
Through a volunteer-driven effort, Toganmain Woolshed Precinct Inc continues to restore and preserve the site for future generations, ensuring that its story is told for years to come.
