The Malinauskas Government is delivering more support for vulnerable low-income households in regional South Australia, with dozens of new public homes completed, contracted, and under construction in regional communities.
Visiting Whyalla for today’s State Cabinet meeting, Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion has released the latest data on public housing builds and projects in regional centres.
The data shows 65 new public homes have recently been completed in regional SA, 91 new public homes are currently under construction, with a further 16 new public homes contracted, with construction set to start on site in the coming weeks.
Many of the new public homes are being delivered through the Malinauskas Government’s $177.5 million Public Housing Improvement Program (PHIP), which is funding more than 430 new public homes in Adelaide and regional SA.
The SA Housing Trust is investing $200 million annually to deliver new public housing in Adelaide and regional SA.

The SA Housing Trust is the state’s biggest supplier of social housing for rent, providing secure and affordable housing for around 50,000 tenants living in more than 30,000 properties in Adelaide and regional South Australia.

The Malinauskas Government is responding to the national housing crisis by delivering the biggest expansion of public housing across our state for decades.
Rental vacancies are incredibly low in many of our regional centres which places increasing financial pressure on low-income households.
These new builds in our regions are creating vital public housing whilst also stimulating jobs and injecting significant funding into the local economies.
Quotes attributable to Eddie Hughes
I strongly welcome the commitment to building new public housing stock in Whyalla and Port Augusta.
Increasing secure and stable housing is something this Government has prioritised.
In addition to the new builds, funding has also been made available to refurbish public housing.
