Vinelander pulls in at Donald – passengers back on Mildura Line

Recent stories

I hear a train a coming, its rolling round the bend” sang the late great Johnny Cash, and might have been a song that came to mind as the Vinelander rolled into Donald on Friday, June 6, on its way to Mildura as part of the Slow Rail Journey put together by 707 operations based out of the Newport Rail yards in Hobsons’ Bay.

The platform was alive with locals, school kids and visitors as they waited patiently for the return of the Vinelander. For what we are promised will be the first of many more trips in the coming year.

Much to the delight and surprise of locals, former resident Ray (Radar) Armstrong was in control, as STN451 came to a gentle stop on the Donald platform.

Whilst there wasn’t a band to play “Waltzing Matilda” those waiting provided a fitting greeting as the 150 passengers alighted and stretched their legs.

“Whistle Stop”

It truly was a “whistle” stop and no sooner did it arrive, before it was on its way again, heading up the line.

The whole event, which was only pulled together over a few days, was a tribute to what the Donald community can do.

To all the volunteers who turned up to present the Donald Station at its pristine best, and who made the Vinelander welcome, thank you.

Next time, the promise is that the Vinelander will live up to its advertising and be a true Slow Rail Journey and “linger long” at Donald.
