River levees to be reinforced to protect community

Mildura Rural City Council, Media Release, 12 November 2022

Work is about to start on a major project to reinforce or establish levees along a three-kilometre stretch of riverfront near Flora Avenue and Ranfurly Way. The works are aimed at protecting our community ahead of continuing rising river levels.

Working under the direction of lead agency the Victorian State Emergency Service, Council will reinforce or add to existing earthen levees along a 1.5-kilometre stretch of riverfront near Flora Avenue and Ranfurly Way to protect against predicted peak flood levels.

A new 1.8-kilometre-long levee will also be established near the Lower Murray Water treatment plant to protect this facility.

Council’s Acting General Manager Development Daryl Morgan said residents, particularly those along Ranfurly Way and Flora Avenue, would begin to see activity in their area in coming days.

“Our teams will start the first of these works in the next couple of days and residents may see some road closures in the immediate area along Ranfurly Way,” Mr Morgan said.

“This is nothing to be alarmed about, it’s simply to allow safe access for earthmoving and other equipment to complete these works ahead of the peak river heights later this month.”

The reinforcement works will focus on levees from near the beginning of Flora Avenue to what is colloquially known as ‘3MA corner’ on Ranfurly Way and be undertaken in a staged approach.

Mr Morgan said the reinforcement works were aimed at providing additional protection for houses in the immediate areas and the broader community.

He said Council was also continuing to monitor areas along Ranfurly Way leading up to Pump Hill to determine if additional levee reinforcement is required.
