Small town is desperate for a GP

Recent stories

Following its public campaign to get a child care director in Julia Creek, McKinlay Shire Council is now trying to get a new GP to live in the community.

The otherwise burgeoning town is emphatically seeking a new doctor at its brand-new, health facility.

North West Hospital and Health Service, in partnership with McKinlay Shire Council, is recruiting a senior medical officer or general practitioner for Julia Creek.

“As SMO/GP at McKinlay Shire Multi-Purpose Health Service, you will be at the heart of the Julia Creek community,” its pitch to doctors read.

“The role provides clinical care for the local community and leads the associated multidisciplinary patient care team, yet is also part of a broader supportive and collaborative professional network spanning the NWHHS.

“The opportunity presents a chance to experience the incredible variety offered by rural and remote healthcare and see patients in acute and community settings.”

McKinlay Shire chief executive officer Trevor Williams said beyond the professional, the position offers an unforgettable, potentially life-changing experience.

“Our 24-hour gym, Smart Hub with high speed internet, library, walking trails, outstanding local shopping and dining ensure that we are a town that punches well above our weight,” he said.

“Couple that with a two-minute commute to work, an excellent local school and close proximity to the Gulf and Townsville, this vacancy presents an outstanding opportunity for those looking for a welcome change of pace.”

The co-sponsored push from the council and NWHHS said working in Julia Creek would give the successful applicant a better work-life balance.

“Live and work surrounded by the expansive landscape of outback Queensland,” they said.

“Spend more quality time doing the things you love or with your family.

“Julia Creek has ridden many tides to become a bustling town with cattle, mining, farming, and tourism forming the major economic pillars.

“A locale known for its out-standing liveability with a bevy of local events and sporting/recreation clubs, Julia Creek offers an exceptional prospect for professionals and their families.”
