Town of Port of Headland, Media Release, 1 June 2021
Earthworks and preliminary works have commenced for the Marapikurrinya Park pop-ups project, delivered in partnership by the Town and BHP.
The project includes installing two upcycled shipping containers on the site, which will be used for pop-up markets, cafes and small business trading. Other project outcomes will include seating, lighting and landscaping.
Installation of the shipping containers is set to arrive and be installed in June. The project is part of the reinvigoration of the West End district, which includes the current greening works. Trade from the pop-ups will boost economic activity, support local job creation and foster skills development.
Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the project’s progress, reflecting on its benefits for the local community. “The Town and BHP have worked to deliver the Marapikurrinya Park pop-ups project, a central part of our vision to reinvigorate the West End, and support small business.
“I’d like to thank BHP for investing $630,000 to make this project possible, realising the potential for port-side trading and dining in the heart of the West End.“I’d like to thank the local businesses and community groups who were involved in last year’s consultation for the project, which provided valuable insights for the project.“I look forward to seeing the completed site in the near future.”
“We continue to work proactively with the Town of Port Hedland, the Hedland Maritime Initiative and the community to transform the West End into a maritime precinct,” said BHP General Manager, Port Operations, Nilson Davila.
“This funding is part of that vision, helping to make port-side trading and dining a reality.”
