The long-awaited National Carp Control Plan has now been handed to the federal Agriculture Department, but there is no news on when it will be made public. The South Australian Liberal Party is calling on the Labor Government to publicly release the plan immediately.

Mayor eyes biosecurity alternatives across Cape
Cook Shire mayor Peter Scott says the closure of the Cape York Biosecurity Centre appears to be a foregone conclusion and plans must start for alternative measures in the region. Cr Scott spoke with officials from the Department of Fisheries and Agriculture on Friday and walked away believing that there was little hope of saving the Coen facility.

Traditional Owners likely to take over Coen facility
The state government appears likely to hand the keys to the Cape York Biosecurity Centre to local Traditional Owners, with no plans to keep a permanent biosecurity presence. Cape York Weekly can reveal the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has been in talks with the Cape York Land Council about giving the facility to Traditional Owners when it shuts down, which could be in a matter of months.

National honey bee genetics program rolls on
Plan Bee, Australia’s national honey bee genetic improvement program has had its hives at Tocal Agricultural College euthanised as part of the all-of-industry response to the 2022 varroa mite incursion. Prior to the hive euthanasia, selected highest value queen bees were removed securely and re-homed to ensure these genetics are banked for future breeding and research.
