Remote community leading the way on renewables revolution
The tiny outback community of Marlinja has taken its first steps towards its goal of becoming a leader in remote renewable energy generation with the launch of a solar-powered community centre this week. The Marlinja Community Centre is a partnership between the Marlinja community and Original Power’s Clean Energy Communities Project which is working to empower Indigenous communities to take the lead on the remote renewables revolution through incubation of community-owned solar projects across the Northern Territory.
Tennant Creek farewells beloved ‘Froggy’
Hundreds of mourners turned out to farewell iconic local, Denise Goddard on Tuesday. While the funeral was held at St Mary’s Cathedral in Darwin, Tennant Creek was well represented, with current priest, Father John and former priest, Father Joseph from Christ the King Catholic Parish amongst those officiating at the service. Denise, whose Aboriginal heritage is Kaytetye, was born and raised in Tennant Creek although ongoing health problems took her away from the town she loved for years at a time.
Ministers drop in to support Jurnkurukurr volunteers
The Jurnkurakurr Volunteers continue to turn up each night at BP in their efforts to curb some of the anti-social behavior around Tennant Creek. The word of what they are doing appears to be spreading far and wide, with several visitors coming along last week to see what is happening in our community.
Four Barkly youth in awards spotlight
Four Barkly youth have shone in the 2021 Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards. Hugh Dawson (22) from Elliott won the Colemans Contracting and Earthmoving Agriculture Award, and was selected as the overall winner from all 12 categories of this year’s awards. He was nominated for his ability to recognise the opportunities of the cattle industry for young people.
Three tiers of Govt sign to show it’s still a Deal!
Marking the second anniversary of the signing of Australia’s first ever regional deal – all three tiers of government joined to show their recommitment to the Barkly Regional Deal. Federal Minister Nola Marino, Minister Selena Uibo and Barkly Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin signed a Statement of Recommitment at the Council Chambers to make a clear commitment to working together with the community, continue to seek input from the local community, business leaders, youth and investors, and support Aboriginal leadership in the region.
Local kids test out the BMX track
Catherine Grimley. After having to reschedule to Friday morning, there were plenty of kids at the BMX track Friday morning to give the track a test run ... Tennant Creek was fortunate to have visiting internationally renowned coach, Jade McPherson, at the tryouts to give riders the benefit of his experience, as well as WA and international champion Rider, Jordan Callum along to demonstrate some more advanced skills.
Supermarket chair thanks volunteers for dramatic crime decline at store
The chair of Tennant Creek’s relief supermarket has thanked the hard work and dedication of the Jurnkkurakurr Volunteers action group for a dramatic decline in theft and vandalism at the store and the 24-hour BP service station ... Volunteers, including Traditional Owners and other community leaders, now sit outside the BP and supermarket every night, talking to youth wandering the streets and encouraging them to go home.
Water works planned for Epenarra
New and the installation of bulk water meter monitoring at Epenarra are part of the NT Government’s plan to shore up water security in Aboriginal communities across the NT. A $28 million investment will provide tailored projects in ten remote communities to improve water quality and supply infrastructure, prioritising areas of critical need ... Minister for Indigenous Essential Services Chansey Paech said his Government was committed to improving water security across the NT.
